The Madness!

There's a lot going on in Perth at the moment, in fact there's almost too much! It could quite possibly blow your little minds and give you a severe case of the Madness!
To start with, the Fringe Festival has the number one spot to hang out with its awesome Fringe World - a magical oasis of coolness in the middle of the city at the Old Treasury (and the place to spot Barry Morgan after his World of Organ shows). You will also find roving carny folk (beware!), lots of astro turf and palette seating and even a tank with mermaids! And I haven't even mentioned all the shows you can go to or the Spiegeltent!
The Perth International Arts Festival burst into town on Saturday night with Place des Anges. There were feathers raining down on the city of Perth, crazy French performers, Les Studios de Cirque, zooming down wires from the tops of buildings and a giant inflatable angel flying down St George's Terrace!
On the other side of town there is the more 'grown-up' Festival Gardens (also making use of plenty of astro turf) with pretty lanterns and bars made out of huge pipes from the C.Y. O'Connor pipeline!
Korean artist Choi Jeong Hwa has been getting around town too, leaving his mark in Stirling Gardens with Air/Air, his giant pink and green triangular constructions made out of plastic baskets and he's also filled up Gallery Central with wriggly balloons for his exhibition Life/Life and you can also see his giant inflatable lotus at UWA.
I'm pooped just thinking about it! I guess I will have a case of the Madness for another few weeks at least! Yippee!

Semi-Permanent Perth 2011 - A design conference with beer!

It's not at many conferences that you can enjoy an alcoholic beverage* whilst listening to the speakers but this typifies the relaxed atmosphere of Semi-Permanent Perth - where speakers present with a hangover (remarkably well, considering!) and our books don't quite make it on time (I finally got mine 2 months later!).

I'm not sure why Semi-Permanent extends its conference tour to Perth but I'm glad they do. I can only assume it's more of a franchise with Semi Permanent lending the name and a few speakers and Artrage/Bakery doing the the rest. I've been to the conference in Sydney and it's a slick 2 day affair to an audience of hundreds, unlike the Perth event! It's nice to be able to see speakers in a more intimate setting though and helps Perth feel not so forgotten by the eastern states. I really appreciate the opportunity to be able to go to a design conference in my own city for once. Yay, no airfares!

We had a rather dapper MC with a self-proclaimed "pleasing baritone" (who was that guy?) and after a few technical issues, the conference was underway.

The first speakers were Sonja and John from Nude Design Studio, based in Perth. They have been producing their minimal contemporary designs for about 3 years and had some valuable tips about alternatives to using stock photos and some legal 'advice'. They seemed disappointed that in their first year, they barely made $28000 but when I found out they did this while travelling the world and working on a mini laptop, I was impressed!

For Sydneysiders, Morten & Daniel of Supervixen seemed awfully nice! And they actually got through their presentation in the allocated time, which they said was a first. Well done! They both started out in motion graphics by learning on the go and believe that mistakes don't have to be failures, they are just another part of learning. I was quite excited to find out they developed the cute food characters on the Wrigley's ad! I love that doughnut! :)

Next came Gemma O'Brien, an ebullient & passionate type enthusiast. She shares her love of type through her blog which amazingly enabled her to be invited to speak at a design conference in Berlin as a 2nd year design student - wow! She just loves type!

Ken Taylor, a Perth-born, Melbourne-based illustrator was the 4th speaker. I've seen him speak before but he is such a talented illustrator, I'm not complaining! He shared a glimpse of his working technique which is always interesting to see.

Lastly, Brendan Savage from Fuel VFX told us about how he was 'living the dream' getting to work on big movies including a lot of Marvel Comics movies and a prequel to the 'Aliens' movies. Although it was potentially financially very risky with the company not being paid for their work they did for pitches, even though they could spend weeks on it. But without doing a pitch, they would never get the job.

Overall, it was an interesting day, surprisingly not as well attended as last year's conference (maybe due to their lack of a 'big name' international presenter). Thanks to all the speakers and organisers and I look forward to next year's conference!

Last days at Montage 3!

It's nearly three months since we opened our Montage pop-up shop at 140william. The time has gone very quickly and it's nearly time for us to pop away again! It's been great to meet all our customers and see the appreciation for all our hard work. If you haven't made it in yet, you've got until 5pm, Sunday 23rd October and then we will vanish into the night...

I can hardly believe it but we're up to our third incarnation of the Montage pop-up shop! Our current location is in the heritage shop on the corner of William and Wellington Streets, Perth - the same street as our Northbridge shop but on the other side of the railway. It's a great space with plenty of natural lighting and chock-a-block full of local handmade goodness! It's so fun to be able to set up our shop again - we take turns working in there so please come in to see us soon!

Busy Bunny!

The past few months have been extremely busy! Starting with preparations for Perth Upmarket, followed by preparations for the Made on the Left market, as well as the Montage pop-up shop! It's all happening at once!

One of my new items for the Perth Upmarket was this screenprinted squirrel cushion. It has a cute acorn patterned fabric on the back. I think he looks quite comfy on this retro armchair!

Now on to Made on the Left - this was the first MOTL market where I have been a part of the committee organising it. I got to find out how much hard work and planning actually goes into a market (a lot!) and all by volunteers! I really enjoyed being part of the team and helping to bring this great event together :)

The venue for this market was the one40william building in the Perth CBD - it had an industrial look with unfinished surfaces, lots of concrete and tubing but unfortunately included zero lighting! Fortunately it had big windows to let natural light in and some hired spotlights attempted to light the rest of the area (when they decided to work!). I really liked the feel of it - I just wished I had had time to look at all the other stalls - there were so many good ones! It was great that so many people came along too. Here's my table all set up with some new bunting for decoration.

As part of the build up for the market, I was interviewed for an article in the Post newspapers! See, I'm famous! :)

If only they'd asked me to supply the photos...

I haven't even got onto telling the adventures behind setting up a pop-up shop yet! I think I'll have to save that for another post. First I'll have a little lie down :)

How exciting! My illustration for the Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School Monster Craft Fair has been shortlisted in the Illustration category of the Create Design Awards! The awards aren't being presented until September so I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed until then! Hopefully I won't need to do anything too fiddly with my hands before then.

The grand opening was last night and it’s now open daily 10 – 5 so come down to 4/64 Adelaide St, Fremantle for some cool handmade goodies – but hurry! We’re only there for three weeks! It's that time already - the first market of the year! This time, it's a very special one - the Made on the Left Pop-up Market in Northbridge, part of the Perth Cultural Centre O'Day! The Pop-up Market will be from 10am - 4pm in the area in front of the museum and there will be lots of other exciting stuff going on in the surrounds, including the opening of the State Theatre Centre, the last day of the Peggy Guggenheim exhibition, a carousel(!) and you’ll be able to see the newly erected Spiegeltent too! So bring your family, friends, relatives and pets (especially chihuahuas! maybe not goldfish) to the Perth Cultural Centre on Sunday 30^th January and check out everything (but especially the Pop-up Market :)! The real Gobbolino (right) – can he recognise himself now?

It’s always exciting to find that I’ve been mentioned in a blog – someone I’ve never met likes my work! Well today I’ve found out I’ve been featured on two blogs!! Supreme excitement!

Firstly Jess of Epheriell Designs posted about the picture of her cat Gobbolino that I did as part of an art swap a while ago. She loves it but happened to mention Gobbolino actually has a stubby tail which I hadn’t noticed when looking at photos of him. I couldn’t resist “fixing up” Gobbolino’s portrait to make it more accurate – I think his stubby tail is cute!

Next up, my Loch Ness Monster brooch was chosen by Amanda of Calico & Co in her selection of contemporary Australian handmade brooches - a great selection if I may say so myself!

Semi-Permanent Perth 2010

A few weeks ago, it was Perth’s turn for the Semi-Permanent conference, and while it is significantly smaller than the eastern states’ incarnation, it is still worth getting along to if you are interested in creative events. This year it was held in The Bakery (which looked surprisingly similar considering it had been closed for renovations for so long...). It wasn’t the best venue for a conference because the seats were not very comfortable and they weren’t tiered meaning we had to peer between people’s heads to see the pictures. First up was Little Design Horse who told about the jetsetting life of a textile designer and their latest venture of Future Shelter. I was quite jealous of all their machines including the laser cutter, the silkscreen printer and the screenprint drying machine - I was imagining how many hours I could save if I didn’t have to iron my prints to heat set them! Next was Clare Martin, a photographer who showed some of her photos, mostly of people from ‘ghetto’ areas in Canada and America who were often drug addicts – some of these images were quite confronting. After a short break came Leif Podhajsky, a graphic designer with some unusual views. He had some techniques which seemed a little dodgy e.g. using images from porn websites or scanned in from old magazines without permission and then altering them. After an extremely short lunchbreak (too short to get any lunch as we found out when we got back and the next speaker had already started!) was Beastman, an artist who does a lot of grafitti type work i.e. painting on walls. I liked his idea of getting a group of artist friends together and organising an exhibition to promote all of them. That’s something I’d like to do, if only I knew enough artists! Lastly were Tin&Ed who seem to have got some pretty good opportunities to do some interesting work. Overall, it was a good day to hear about how other creative people work and we came away with a Semi-Permanent book, bag and some posters! Yay for free stuff!

I've just discovered that one of my items has made an appearance in an etsy treasury! A treasury is a collection of items for sale on etsy curated by anyone who wants to do it, usually to a theme. This treasury was all to do with bubbles and my fish bowl brooch was included. Thanks to porchswingafghans for including me in my very first treasury!

Sunday was the longest Upmarket ever! There was a secret early opening at 8am for Upmarket newsletter subscribers but it seemed that most of you preferred to sleep in! The crowds came at a more decent hour and snapped up the new Tall Rabbit pencils for, I presume, writing literary masterpieces and scribbling brilliant doodles.

The first Handmade Children’s Market was on Saturday. The Melville Civic Hall is a cool old building and it was brightened up by all the colourful stalls. There were lots of good things for babies and children, unfortunately, there just weren’t enough customers! As a wise old rabbit once said, “Invisible rabbits have invisible wallets,” or something like that.

The Animal Band!

Introducing the newest coolest rock band in town… “Animal Band”! This four member group has burst out of nowhere to become the hottest local talent in the Perth music scene since 2001. Featuring a rockin’ rabbit on guitar, a crazy critter on bass, a frenzied fox on vocals and a boisterous bear on drums, you can see them immortalised in print in the Victoria Park Art Awards, displayed at The Park Centre. And it’s for sale!

Update: "Animal Band" has been sold! It has now been sent off with its new mystery owner!

Let’s dress up!

I’ve redesigned my dress up bunnies and teddies from A4 to a more compact A5 size. They still have the same cute outfits, it’s just a different layout. Therefore, I’m selling off the old format CHEAP in my made it store. You can choose from the bunnies or the teddies or even get both! Did you know the bunny clothes fit the teddies and the teddy clothes fit the bunnies? And they don’t mind sharing! They can even be persuaded to cross dress but they’re equally comfortable in the nude. You’ll find out all this and more if you take them home! See for yourself!

It’s just over a week until the next Made on the Left market, at a brand new venue – the Saint Hotel (2 Morris Road, Innaloo)! It’s on the weekend of the 17^th and 18^th of July with different designers on each day. I will be there on the Saturday from 10 – 4 and I’m looking forward to it! Over the next few days, I will be featuring some of my new products which will be available at the market so come back soon for a preview!

The Envelope Project

Inspired by Blainie, I decided to decorate an envelope for Meet Me at Mike’s Envelope Project. To participate, you have to decorate an envelope, put some cute crafty things in it and send it off to their super cool store in Melbourne where they will display them all in the window. I made an envelope out of an A4 sheet of paper and drew some funny little pictures on the front and back which I coloured in with scented coloured pencils (so it will smell extra good after all that travelling). Inside, I put some little stickers, some of my badge pictures and one of my cupcake gift cards.

I then went to the Post Office and demanded the cutest stamp they had, which happened to be this kookaburra from the Australian Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. Now it is on its way – Bon Voyage little envelope!

Perth Upmarket

Sunday was Tall Rabbit’s first appearance at the Perth Upmarket and boy oh boy were there a lot of people! I managed to snap a quick photo of my stand before the hoards of people came rushing in. It was also the first appearance of lots of exciting new Tall Rabbit products including mini notebooks, badge sets, a new range of cards, lasercut brooches and my business cards!

Etsy’s 5th Birthday

Friday 18^th June was Etsy’s 5^th birthday so they decided everyone should celebrate! Etsy Craft Parties were organised around the world, including one here in Perth! It was at the Saint Hotel in Innaloo (the venue for the upcoming Made on the Left market) so we decided to hop along and join in the crafting celebrations. It was also a good opportunity to meet some other crafty Perth people, including Anna and Orlando, the crochet champions! There were all kinds of activities happening including making bunting for the Made on the Left market, screenprinting, envelope decoration, knitting, crochet, origami, jewellery making, my little ponies, a craft supplies swap, photographing and plenting of talking. We even had a birthday cake with extremely festive orange icing. Thanks to Lauren for organising the night!

Crochet Poodles

I love almost anything in the shape of a poodle and considering my increasing lack of space, a useful poodle is even better. This poodle is extremely useful in covering bottles so instead of opening your cupboards and looking like an alcoholic, you can instead look like a crazy poodle freak, which is much better. Unfortunately, I only have a talcum powder bottle poodle cover which is not nearly as exciting as this suave Pierre covering your finest bottle of peach schnapps. The crochet cover girl seems to agree. She's found a new best friend! One day I hope to be able to crochet well enough so I can have my very own fancy booze hound.

My new favourite magazine!

On my recent trip to Melbourne, I came across Uppercase magazine and I love it! It is for "the creative and curious" and it's all the way from Canada. Starting from the exquisite cover by Matte Stephens through to the very last superbly designed page, there is something interesting! It covers illustration, design, craft, textiles, books, films and so much more! Unfortunately, there is only one stockist in the whole of the country so who knows when I will get my next copy. Until then, I can clutch at my precious edition of issue 5 and sigh over its brilliance.

It's Perth Festival time again and there have been a huge variety of acts from around the world. It's a great time of year but also an extremely busy and expensive one! My highlights so far have been Wunderschön with Meow Meow and Die Roten Punkte. I have their super hit songs Ich bin Nicht ein Roboter (I am a Lion) and Super Musikant stuck in my head! Those crazy Germans! And I cannot forget to mention the photo booth at Beck's Box - such fun!

Unwrapped update

It's nearly a month since the Unwrapped market and I've almost recovered....

It was a disappointing day - very VERY hot (rumoured to have reached 40 degrees C) and not as well attended as I had hoped. There was hardly any shade with customers and stall holders huddled under the meagre umbrellas. Thank goodness the predicted thunderstorms did not arrive! The grassed area had turned into a dusty sandpit leaving me and my products covered in a fine layer of grit by the end of the day. And then the wind came and started blowing things over. I have vowed never to do an outdoor market again!

The Made on the Left Market was held on Saturday and Sunday. I had my stall on the Saturday. This is a picture of my table all set up and ready to start trading! I had a few new items and was interested to see how they would go. The big seller was my "18 amazingly cute stickers" which sold out, so that was a big success! The dress up teddies and bunnies were also quite popular with a lot of people reminiscing about their childhood paper dolls. Both days offered a unique selection of handmade goodies all made in Western Australia!

Next weekend is the Made on the Left market at the Hyde Park Hotel. I'll be having a stall on the Saturday to sell my cute wares which I have been busily preparing! There are different designers on the Sunday and I'll be going to that too (maybe to do some shopping!). It will be a great place to find some unique Christmas gifts. It would be nice to have the Christmas shopping done early this year!

Today two of my little cushions were featured in the Habitat liftout of the West Australian! It was very exciting to see my little ghost and bunny in the paper. Now they are famous!
