Made on the Left Christmas market

Last weekend was probably my biggest achievement of the year so far - the Made on the Left Christmas markets! It was over two days in Forrest Place, Perth. I am on the volunteer committee and help organise it and boy is it a lot of work! From our first meeting with the City of Perth in August, we started planning and organising and working working working! There's so much that goes on behind the scenes that I never knew about before I joined Made on the Left. Sometimes it was overwhelming and stressful but it all worked out in the end. Phew! I'm so proud to be part of the Perth creative community, with so much talent on offer! Thank you to everyone who supports it by coming to the Made on the Left markets and everyone who helped out to make sure it all went well. We did it!

It's show time! Perth Royal Show time! This year it featured food, puppies, bunnies, cool alpacas, fluffy chickens, psychedelic chickens, doughnuts and also robots, diving pigs, baby animals, cheese toasties, sausage on a stick, more animals, prize winning cakes, Tron horses and fireworks! Goodbye Montage 9!

It's time for our little shop to close... 3 months has sure gone quickly!
Now the hunt is on to find another home for Montage – fingers crossed we can open up another shop before the end of the year!

Dino invasion!

Eeek! Has Perth been invaded by dinosaurs?!!
Don't worry, it's just the museum ... and there is a fence to keep us safe. Phew!

Numbat on the numbat market!

I'm having a stall at the Made on the Left markets on Sunday! It's at the State Theatre Centre of WA in Northbridge from 10 – 4. There will be 70 very talented stallholders with everything made in WA. Yay!

Competition: Name the Numbats!
Can you think of the perfect name for this trio of crafty numbats? You could win a print of the artwork to pick up from the market! Either comment on this post, on Facebook or email your suggestion to nicole [at] madeontheleft.com and give these little creatures the names they've been waiting for!

The numbats are out of the bag!

I can finally reveal the rest of my numbat illustration!

I was so excited to be asked to do the poster for the July Made on the Left market. It is my favourite market to do and I like it so much, I am even a volunteer committee member and part of the team that organises it. I had my first stall at a Made on the Left market in 2008 and haven't missed one since so I am very happy to be able to do this illustration. I chose numbats as the stars of this poster as they are a WA emblem (and I like drawing cute little animals). I like to image that somewhere out there a group of crafty numbats is getting together and making jewellery, knitting and painting, getting ready for their very own market (possibly called Made in the Bush). They'd have bunting made out of gum leaves, their goods spread out on tree trunks and pay for things with termites...

Mystery numbat

I have a sneaky preview of something I'm working on at the moment. This cheeky little fellow is part of a larger image which will be unveiled soon and I'm excited!!

Sculptures by the Sea

Every year, Sculpture by the Sea is on at Cottesloe Beach with more sculptures than you can poke a stick at (please do not poke the artworks). The exhibiting artists are from all around the world and the sculptures range from small to enormous and conservative to controversial. This year the sculptures attracting the most publicity were the giant goon bag and the Barbie wave.

Cottesloe Beach with 'Bulk Carrier' (aka Giant Goon Bag) by Norton Flavel (WA) on the right

The giant goon bag had seen better days by the time we got to it. It lay semi-deflated on the sand, pulsating and undulating like a beached alien whale with its underbelly peeling silver and its seams threatening to pop a leak at any moment. That didn't stop the cameras snapping and the people posing in front of it and it seemed to be one of the most popular sculptures there! Also the one most likely to be alive.
'Permanent Sunset' by Alejandro Propato (Argentina)

'Wave 1' by Annette Thas (WA)
Thousands of Barbie dolls made up "Wave 1" which was also very popular and surrounded by crowds. With more second-hand Barbie dolls than you'd find at a Barbie bargain barbeque, it was a sight to behold! Masses of blonde hair and naked bodies (some headless) crashing down upon you would be much worse than getting dumped by an actual wave, especially with all the arms poking out at all angles and the many staring eyes and fixed smiles...

'Rescheduling Permanence' (aka Doily Hut) by Helen Seiver (WA)

'Fetch (2012)' (aka Almost Invisible Dogs) by The Winged Collective (VIC)

'Once Removed' (aka Glass Feet) by Robert Barnstone

'Der Traum' (the dream) by Wolfgang Friz (Germany)

Once again, it was an interesting evening at the beach, racing around to see all the sculptures before the sun went down and nicely finished off with an ice cream. Yum!
